Troy Kirkham (Class of 1992)
CEO of SportWest
After graduating from Karratha Senior High School in 1992, I could never have imagined where sport would take me. I was fortunate to be School Captain at Karratha SHS, an experience that gave me an early sense of leadership and responsibility that has stayed with me throughout my career.

After school, I went on to university and became a Physical Education teacher, later progressing into a Deputy Principal role working in the Wheatbelt. Education gave me a strong foundation in leadership, people and community. From there, I transitioned into the sport industry, working my way through various roles to become the WA Football Commission’s Executive Manager of Game Development and Community Football, where I was able to positively impact participation and grassroots Football right across the state.
A career highlight was being awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship, which allowed me to travel internationally to explore youth sport systems across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. During this time, I spent time with many organisations including the NFL, The FA and Rugby England, gaining insights that continue to shape my thinking today.
Today I am the Chief Executive Officer of SportWest, the peak body for sport in Western Australia. Our role is to lead and advocate for the sport and recreation sector—shaping the narrative around the powerful role sport plays in building healthier, more connected communities. By working closely with government, industry and partners, we aim to strengthen the sports system and ensure every Western Australian has the opportunity to experience the benefits of sport.
If I could offer one piece of advice to current students, it would be this: stay curious and back yourself. You don’t need to have everything figured out straight away. Say yes to opportunities, learn from the people around you, and don’t be afraid to take a chance—sometimes the most rewarding journeys are the ones you never planned.

Since Karratha Senior High School (Class of 2000), my professional life has taken me in different directions, but in many ways it has brought me back to where it all began.

After school, I moved away from Karratha to study, work and build my experience across communications, marketing and media. Over the years, I found a real passion for helping organisations tell their stories in a way that feels meaningful, strategic and connected to community.
Today, I am proud to be living back in Karratha and running Impact Digi, a creative marketing and communications business. Returning home and building a business here has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. It has allowed me to contribute to the region that shaped me, work with local businesses and organisations, and support stories that matter across the Pilbara and beyond.
Looking back, I am grateful for growing up in Karratha and the rewarding lifestyle it offers.
My advice to current students is to back yourself and be open to unexpected opportunities. Every experience can teach you something valuable. Don’t underestimate where you come from—it can be one of your greatest strengths.
