Teaching and Learning at KSHS: Our Whole School Approach
At Karratha Senior High School, we are committed to teaching and learning excellence in every classroom. Our whole-school instructional model ensures consistent, high-quality teaching that supports all students to achieve success and pursue their aspirations. We aim to create an environment where students are challenged, engaged, and supported with their learning.
Whole School Instructional Model
We use Explicit Instruction (EI) to provide clear, consistent and purposeful lessons across all year levels. EI helps us reduce variability in teaching, making sure every student experiences high quality instruction in every classroom.
Our approach is evidenced based and supports the Department of Education’s Focus 2025 Quality Teaching Strategy. This aligns with the Western Australian Curriculum, the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, and the Department of Education’s Teaching for Impact framework. By incorporating EI across the school, we support our teachers, engage our students, and help all young people achieve their best.

Key Components of the Instructional Model
Clear lessons: Teachers explain exactly what students will learn and what success looks like providing learning intentions and success criteria.
Daily reviews: Teachers review previous learning to help students remember and build confidence.
Active participation: Students stay involved through the use of engagement norms to maintain student focus, promote active participation, and reinforce learning expectations. this includes answering together, using whiteboards, reading aloud, and guided practice.
Checking progress: Teachers regularly check student progress and adjust their teaching to support each student. Formal summative assessments are integrated to monitor student progress, inform instructional adjustments, and identify areas for targeted intervention. Data-driven insights help to refine instructional delivery and improve student outcomes.
